Tan Chong have done a great job putting thousands of 1st generation Nissan X-Trails on Malaysian roads since its launch. With two successful versions, a 2-liter and a 2.5-liter, the X-Trail has been popular with families and individuals with an active lifestyle. The rather boxy design and ergonomic interior has been popular for its ability to keep passengers comfortable on journeys and provide ample cargo room for all kinds of family and utilitarian uses. Even with a tried and tested 4x4 system ready to tackle the dirt, most owners have never driven their X-Trail off the tarmac. The local town councils and works department who have made the X-Trail their preferred purchase the past few years have not ventured past broken pavements as little off-road work has come in their path. Identifying this change in consumer drive behavior, Tan Chong have worked with Nissan to bring in the latest 2nd generation X-Trail to Malaysia in 2 wheel drive form only. There are reasons for this. First, having a 2-wheel drive system, relates to better fuel efficiency and lower running costs. Second, most buyers today are wanting a SUV like drive position and feel and do not need to have expensive 4x4 technology. This is why we are testing the all new 2-wheel drive Nissan X-Trail this month.
